200522 Introduction

Hey everyone! It’s been almost two years since we started Empt studio and we’re now very excited to launch this additional journal section to share about our thoughts to you! It could be an inspiration, architect, and works that inspire us, our recent trip or even songs that we listen to! As for this, we’re going to share a little back story of the studio (and hopefully it won’t bore you away to continue watching cute videos).
Before Empt studio, there’s four of us who came from different regions of peninsular Malaysia, met in our former college (The One Academy) and having the same dream of pursuing in the architecture world. Eventually, our paths aligned after we graduate and lucky enough to still share the same design approach years after we graduated, and BOOM, Empt studio is born!
A lot may not get the pronunciation of our studio name right at the first place, or asking does the name Empt have any philosophical meaning to it. It is pronounced as ‘emp’, empty without the ‘tee’. Well, we first explore quite an amount of different names that could relate and link us back to the line (interior) that we’re in, but couldn’t really come out with a name that all of us satisfied. In the end we all have agreed and decided to go with a name that doesn’t have any particular meaning to it, and we ourselves will be the one that are going to define and give meaning to it.
Our goal is simple, we want to give life and purpose to a space, to create a space that breathes soul, form deep human connections and a space where people enjoy spending time in. We believe that when it comes to designing a space, it is not only about the form and function, it is also about creating the mood and ambiance that feels right, the environment that make sense to serve the purpose of the space.
‘You have to feel with your eyes as well, not only look, but feel with them’, quoted by Axel Vervoordt. We hope that for the road to come, we could work towards and build spaces that are sensible and emotional compelling. See you guys very soon again, until then, stay tuned!
