The ornate wooden doorways that once lined the heritage streetscapes of Malaysia are more than just physical structures — they are symbols of safety, hope, and sanctuary for early Chinese immigrants and workers. For instance, each meticulously carved pattern carried specific meaning in Chinese mythology; bats signified good fortune, while goldfish represented prosperity. Regrettably, these once ubiquitous architectural features are now being replaced by pre-fabricated designs that lack the warmth and cultural significance. As this trend continues to undervalue the past, we seek to reimagine these door panels in a contemporary context, using techniques rooted in traditional craftsmanship. By doing so, we hope to reignite interest among the younger generation in preserving this quintessential cultural heritage. Recognising that traditional Chinese carvers rarely worked in straight lines, we have introduced structured outlines to frame the exquisite carvings. Additionally, modern elements such as beveled edges and textured glass have been integrated to enhance the aesthetic appeal, creating a harmonious blend of heritage and contemporary design.
